Llangollen trip day#5

Wednesday 17th May 2023

Having moored near the centre of a town (Rugeley), on the edge of an industrial estate. we had a very quiet night and managed to catch up on some sleep.

As Graham set us off at 9:15, the young couple in the boat next door waved us off. Through Rugeley towards Rugeley Bank and aqueduct and we passed the beauty pageant on the left hand side of the canal.

There was a bit less wind today but the early sunshine soon changed to lots of grey clouds and it never really got warm until about 4pm. A friend has described the current weather as ‘Sprinter’ on t’interwebnet today. Graham played ‘spot the cell-site’ as we went along.

Brenda spotted her first Kingfisher of 2023 with plumage as bright as a jewel like as she’s never seen before – sadly G missed it. Whilst waiting for another boat to ascend Haywood lock in front of us Brenda went off to get a picture of the river bridge in Shugborough park. I used my birdsong app and identified seven different species singing away whilst we waited.

Left onto the Staffs and Worcester at Gt Haywood junction and apart from a queue of 3 at Tixhall lock, we then found every other lock of the day in our favour until we stopped for the night above Filance lock at Penkridge.

Having already snapped a Heron taking off near Tixhall wide, Graham also spotted a ‘scare-heron’ in the middle of a wheat field before Acton Trussell .
